Hashtags taking over Facebook?

15 Mar

What if I would say that Twitter is taking over Facebook? Would you believe me? Perhaps not “take over” as if Facebook been purchased or overtaken but what about hashtags for Facebook? The Unofficial Facebook blog AllFacebook reports that development for adding “hashtags” is happening.

What would that mean? For example that you could search for discussions around particular topic, search for images with a hashtag (as photo-sharing application Instagram already uses this and was acquired by Facebook last September) or aiding targeted advertising.

From a company perspective this might also enhance quality of social media monitoring as today conversations taking place behind private Facebook profiles and only public posts are picked by “social media monitoring” tools/services. Another opportunity could be to find brand advocates that are sharing their view of brand  in hashtag conversations. And what about goals for marketers, ROI of social media campaigns. Opportunities are big. So is the risk of spamming the news feed.

How would this affect your life? Or would you even care?

Yes, I would say the same way as Google+ which has been more open from start and understood that conversations around topics needs to gathered.

Facebook hashtags for brands would be a bigger shift, to understand customers better where conversations are taking place, who they are etc.

Hashtagging on Facebook, I believe, would be a natural progression. People are already using hashtags on Facebook (even though they don’t contribute anything) and since Facebook has acquired Instagram I believe It would make sense for them to use it. The measurement aspect of it would also help companies track interactions among followers.

I think it would be a great idea for Facebook to incorporate hashtags. With the new graph search, Facebook seems to constantly be looking for a way to stay ahead of the game so it’s surprising they haven’t already jumped on this social trend.

I look forward to seeing where this goes. Thanks for posting!

Totally agree and hope also that a bigger improvement is coming. And as I have been thinking more on this, hashtag adaption among brands in traditional commercials would grow as we would have all 3 bigger channels supporting – Twitter, Google+ and Facebook.

Thank you for commenting and taking time to give your input.
