How to write better? Improve your writing for an article, a blog post, or a SxSw coverage

15 Mar

As I have been blogging for little over a year, I have always struggled on how to write my blog posts. I usually find myself disoriented in my mind among the ideas I have and it was only when listening on HBR Ideacast podcast (by the way, a good podcast) Bryan Garner was interviewed by HBR’s Sarah Green on “How to improve your business writing” I understood how to write competently. And I want to make you also better writers.

Bryan Garner has an proposal for

Madman, Architect, Carpenter and Judge

Madman

Use your imagination and write down every idea that comes to your mind. At this point do not judge any ideas, this is a brainstorming part.

Architect

Take a look at all the ideas been written down and start Thinking about propositions – 3 main points you are looking – a sensible order for all ideas.

Carpenter

Write out paragraphs to support the propositions, and write out all your ideas more fully in a very rapid way. A this point no editing is done.

Judge

Go back and very critically judge what has been written and expressed. How can this been written better? How is this article or blog post been interpretered by someone else? Is it selling enough?

Hashtags taking over Facebook?

15 Mar

What if I would say that Twitter is taking over Facebook? Would you believe me? Perhaps not “take over” as if Facebook been purchased or overtaken but what about hashtags for Facebook? The Unofficial Facebook blog AllFacebook reports that development for adding “hashtags” is happening.

What would that mean? For example that you could search for discussions around particular topic, search for images with a hashtag (as photo-sharing application Instagram already uses this and was acquired by Facebook last September) or aiding targeted advertising.

From a company perspective this might also enhance quality of social media monitoring as today conversations taking place behind private Facebook profiles and only public posts are picked by “social media monitoring” tools/services. Another opportunity could be to find brand advocates that are sharing their view of brand  in hashtag conversations. And what about goals for marketers, ROI of social media campaigns. Opportunities are big. So is the risk of spamming the news feed.

How would this affect your life? Or would you even care?

Trending topic at SXSW 2013 – Storytelling

7 Mar

Starting March 8, thousands of tech professionals, entertainers, entrepreneurs and fans will gather in Austin, Texas for 10 days of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Conferences.

When looking at the lineup of sessions available for the SxSW Interactive, I clearly see Storytelling as the Big thing for this year

What is Storytelling? A definition by Wikipedia refers it as “Storytelling is the conveying of events in words, images, and sounds, often by improvisation or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation, and to instill moral values. Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot, characters, and narrative point of view”

Storytelling

In social media, Storytelling is, at its core, is more than just telling stories about a brand, and social media storytelling is more than just creating Facebook, Twitter and blog posts promoting that brand. Effective brand stories must embody the brand. They must be unique and noticeable and inspire people to engage, share and eventually buy (or watch, or whatever drives profitability). They must be selfless and meaningful to audiences.

In this video Coca-Cola explains video he explains how Coke will leverage the opportunities in the new media landscape and transform one-way storytelling into dynamic storytelling hoping to add value and significance to peoples lives

If you are visiting SxSW Interactive, I recommend you to search for the topic “storytelling” (86 sessions is about the topic) and find out what storytelling is all about – my favorites are:

Mashable is reporting that some Facebook users in New Zealand has a updated Timeline, with changes the top of the page in particular, removing the photo tiles for Friends and Photos, and moving Map and Subscriber information lower on the page.

One exciting change for Pages is the redesign for sharing a link on Facebook – now you can directly Like a company. This has been rumored for a while that Facebook would launch this feature.
